Jin Heewoong (b. 1985, Korea) is a Korean interdisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal. His practice explores how overlooked materials and everyday infrastructures reveal the aesthetic, economic, and social systems that shape daily life. Through subtle tensions between order and disorder, his installations activate the quiet histories embedded in found and industrial objects.
His recent work turns toward the lived experience of migration and the nearly invisible colonial gaze that moves through language, naming, and adaptation. The repeated mispronunciations of his name—Heewoong becoming “Hugh” in Toronto or “Guillaume” in Montreal—opened a broader inquiry into how names operate as tools of blending in the West. This extends to the ways immigrant and second-generation communities alter or reinvent names to navigate dominant linguistic norms. Across video, writing, and installation, Jin examines these negotiations between visibility and assimilation, fluency and distortion, belonging and estrangement.
Jin holds a BFA and MFA in Painting from Cheongju University and an MFA in Sculpture from Concordia University. His work has been presented at Dazibao (2024), Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (SIGHTINGS 39, 2023; IGNITION, 2022), Centre MAI (2023), Maison de la culture Janine-Sutto (2022), Peripheral Hours, Montreal (2019), Cheongju International Craft Biennale (2017), and the Real DMZ Project at Art Sonje Center (2015).
