Two curtains—embroidered with the words Fluency and Non-Native—open and close in quiet alternation. The movement turns the everyday act of drawing a curtain into a rhythm of inclusion and exclusion, where language operates as both barrier and passage. Each word exposes its own contradiction: Fluency implies mastery and transparency, while Non-Native marks distance and difference. As the curtains move, the two terms exchange places, suggesting that linguistic identity is never fixed but constantly negotiated through repetition and gesture. When I introduce myself as Heewoong, it is often heard as Hugh in Toronto or Guillaume in Montréal. This recurring misrecognition reveals how language, accent, and identity are continuously reshaped through context. Through casting and molding processes, I work with disposable and everyday materials to examine how objects, like names, shift in meaning as they move across different systems of understanding. The act of translation—between languages, materials, and places—becomes both a method and a subject. The catalyst was an ordinary picture, encased in a simple Dollarama frame, destined for swift disposal. However, over time, this tranquil image gained a compelling allure, sparking questions that echoed far beyond its initial appearance. Imagine fixing your gaze upon these waves, a calm depiction poised to recede into obscurity. Where did this image originate? Who captured its fleeting moment? And how did it find its place on the shelves of a budget-friendly store? What began as a casual inquiry evolved into an exploration of the intricate interplay between the digital realm and the constant yearning for comprehension and connection. In our contemporary digital age, our pursuit of answers often steers us through the limitless corridors of the internet. Interactions are increasingly channeled through AI-powered customer services, leaving our queries impersonal and generic. Amid technological convenience, the authenticity of genuine human connection can feel elusive. This sentiment remains as the tides of technological advancement continue. My quest for answers extended beyond phone calls, emails, and online research. Through persistence, I was able to trace the image’s origins within Adobe Stock’s vast digital archive—a repository teeming with images waiting to tell their stories. Upon uncovering the photograph, I also found its enigmatic creator: Andrey Amyagov. With hopes of initiating a dialogue that could illuminate the journey of this image, I contacted Amyagov. But our connection proved fleeting, and his responses left me even more intrigued. I came to realize at this stage of the process that the absence of direct human interaction shouldn’t have to impede the evolution of the narrative. In the absence of a tangible connection, I allowed artificial intelligence to take the lead, weaving a tale akin to the digital unveiling of stock imagery. I am no longer waves is a testament to transformation and innate curiosity, reshaping an image once discarded into a vessel for storytelling. It intertwines the threads of human connection and algorithmic intricacies, encapsulating personal narratives within digital abstraction. The project extends beyond pixels and dialogues, evolving into a sculptural entity housed within the Sightings cube. By positioning viewers at a distance, the work investigates the interplay between intimacy and separation, the unhurried tempo of the performers’ movements, and the voyeuristic gaze. PH V, Montreal, Canada 2020 J’ai cherché à faire de la maison un véritable théâtre vivant : deux performeurs circulent dans l’obscurité de ses pièces la nuit, chacun brandissant une lampe torche, tandis que le public, resté à l’extérieur, suit le ballet de ces faisceaux lumineux. Every artist is the author of their individual production and keeps their rights on their individual pieces, but the products are exhibited collectively.&nbsp;We produce site-specific chandeliers. Chandeliers enhance the importance of a space. Historically chandeliers were placed in meaningful sites such as palaces or churches. At such places they were companions of works of art. Chandeliers are ostentatious and they emphasize the significance of locations in a spectacular way. The works explore the relations between art, craft, design and how an object may become meaningful. How does an object become a lamp? How does a lamp become design? How does design become a chandelier and how does a chandelier become a work of art? When I look at the portfolio of multinational corporations, I ask myself: How come one corporation can build houses, ships, televisions, cell phones and cars at the same time? This is certainly not because a multi-talented genius is heading the conglomerate. It is not a matter of expertise. Yet the conglomerate can start any business at any time. This is the power of money, the god of commodities as Marx classified it. It is the all-mightiness of capital. mychandelierchohab uses ideas, attitude and imagination rather than capital to create chandeliers. It is the sky that the vagabond looks to every night. The sky that orients. That is compass, storyteller, companion.When sky becomes the familiar ground, it becomes a material as solid and stable as earth, or clay. The sky becomes as familiar as the white walls of the gallery: expanding past their edges.This is an evening of gallery walls the shape of horizons. ‘As if nothing happened’ is a single-channel video work that constructed with collected footage while looking up the sky daily. QO est un collectif de voyageurs et d'itinérants. Nous partageons une expérience commune de déracinement. Où exposer son travail quand on est en mouvement? Dans la précarité? Le cube blanc donne de l’espace à l’art pour respirer, mais il peut aussi le restreindre. Si nos vies sont faites de mouvement, comment donner le même espace à notre travail? Où exposer notre œuvre lorsque nous travaillons sur un sol inconnu? Le foyer du nomade n'est pas sur la terre, mais dans le ciel. C’est vers le ciel que le vagabond se tourne chaque nuit. Ce ciel oriente, sert de boussole, de conteur, de compagnon. Lorsque le ciel devient un sol familier, il devient un matériau aussi solide et stable que la terre ou l’argile. Le ciel devient aussi familier que les murs blancs de la galerie : il s’étend au-delà de leurs limites. C’est une soirée où les murs de la galerie prennent la forme des horizons. ‘Comme si de rien n'était’ est une vidéo monocanal construite à partir d’images collectées chaque jour en levant les yeux vers le ciel. Regarder le ciel éveille une nostalgie de mon enfance et me rappelle combien je suis loin de chez moi, physiquement et mentalement. The project concerns our interest in finding ways to aesthetically externalize the experience of migration and instability. As immigrants, both of us longed for a homeland or, at least, a community, where we can find people whom might help us feel a sense of belonging. We have met in one of these communities, where we have also met others who have felt the need to cope with their aftermaths of migration. In fact, in these communities, we have also realized our experiences are not exclusive to immigrants alone, but to people from other provinces as well. This led us to wonder if it is not just the distance laid between his/her homeland but also the act of moving itself that causes the experience of migration. Eventually, the project has become a wider research on the effects and experiences of migration in relation to the distance and movement between one’s points of departure and arrival. Take Us Somewhere is an attempt to create a foundation to open dialogue of the meaning and impact of migration in today’s world. The trailer becomes both a vessel of possibility for the artist and a mobile platform for their work. Moving Trailer (2017 – en cours) est une intervention performative dans le paysage urbain. Plutôt que de recourir aux galeries classiques, les expositions se tiennent à l’intérieur d’une remorque, évoquant le rituel du jour de déménagement. Les artistes stationnent la remorque dans des lieux choisis, faisant de chaque arrêt un espace d’installation éphémère. Each time the moving trailer moves, these two objects show instability due to the speed of the vehicle and trembling due to the condition of the road surface. Sometimes it will crash into the wall, It will hit each other and tangle. When the vehicle stops, we see the distance between these two objects. However, Heewoong's work, in contrast to the desire for appropriation in readymade, takes a nonmaterialistic approach to objects, and resembles minimalist sculptures in aspect but does not actively require the existence of an observer. In this, Heewoong's works can be defined as a repudiation of the legacies of art history rather than a safe exploration of its genealogy. Heewoong's works consist of objects discovered by chance. Most of these objects would have been determined to have been depleted of their usefulness and discarded by those who previously owned and used them. Work begins with the selection of objects already once drained of their material properties and purpose. The artist then empties out these objects once more. One might expect objects chosen by the artist to inevitably be a strong reflection of the temporal, spatial, and socioeconomic circumstances of the artist at the time of choosing, but the objects he presents come into the display space and feign ignorance of such circumstances. This is because they are garbed in a new language covering where the user first discarded meaning, then the artist again emptied of meaning. The objects in Heewoong’s works exist as completed sculptures of willful language. The artist takes objects emptied of their original material properties, paints over them with reified language, and entangles the relationships between these newly garbed objects. The multiple layers of vocalization these objects exude overlap, tangle, or parallel each other and resonate. Interpreting Heewoong's method of using objects from a perspective that everyday objects can too become art is a complacent and erroneous approach. Heewoong Jin places objects on the medium or stage of display, and makes it so that the language and volition etc. the artist reinfused each object with radiates out. Heewoong overturns the traditional narratives an object entering the stage of art would be expected to follow, and again overturns the perceptions of an audience dulled despite lifetimes surrounded by objects. Heewoong Jin's objects, within the structure and order of work to revisualize the auditory images of linguistic reiteration created by visual objects garbed in new language, are quietly yet incessantly clamoring. As if they do not know what they originally were, as if they do not know who erased that origin, as if they had always been garbed in the language they are now.
